Keeping It in-HAUS

Upon entering HAUS Salon in Minneapolis’s Kingfield neighborhood, there are many things that could catch your eye at first. In addition to large paintings by local artist Drew Peterson and shampoo beds that sit in place of regular chairs, the salon is not organized like most. Instead of rows of stations, the salon has instead opted for two large wooden tables with four stations at each. Above the tables hang modern chandeliers made out of metal, stone and wood commissioned by Jonathan Gomez Whitney. METRO recently sat down with founders Jessica Reipke (HAUS’s salon director) and Charlie Brackney (creative director) on the large black couch by the fireplace to talk about their new lines of hairstyles inspired by their clients. We both know it’s time for you to get an update—or to get an entire new look altogether. It’s OK, you can trust them (we did).
The first line is the “consumer-ready” Ready to Wear, which was created by the entire HAUS team. “We wanted to tell the city what we’re up to and show them what we’re capable of,” says Brackney. The salon, which just celebrated its six-month anniversary, has another line debuting in Fall 2011 called Haute Couture, which is “about hair and beauty imagery as fine art or couture.” Every year both lines will come out with a new collection that shows off the talents of the artists. “We want to set ourselves apart as the image makers, as the image experts,” says Brackney.
Ready to Wear comprises haircuts and colors that are current and fresh, with a few surprises thrown in by the artists. “These looks are very attainable. We wanted to be really trend focused and forward, but we want someone to flip through a magazine or go on our website and say ‘I want that’,” says Reipke. “[The looks are] totally wearable for anybody in Minneapolis.” The RTW line, which will launch soon via HAUS’s website, is kicking off with a collection called Muse because it is inspired by the clients who had a helping hand in getting the salon started. “We wanted to do something that would allow us as a team of artists to keep our finger on the pulse of what was happening and also to in a sense create trend as well,” says Brackney.
The collection consists of four looks: Lindsay, Emma, Jessica and Camella. Lindsay’s namesake is a client-turned-friend with a strong aesthetic. The haircut is a bold undercut with a long, sweeping top that had always been a gray tone, but the artists amped up and turned into a gun-metal shade. Emma is inspired by local artist and fashion designer Emma Berg, who curated HAUS’s gallery and introduced them to Gomez Whitney. The haircut is essentially made of two different ones, with a strong, rounded fringe at the top and a long, square shape at the bottom. The artists added a bright, shiny silver underneath to add an element of subtle surprise. Founder Reipke inspired the Jessica, which is the dream hair everyone wants: long, wavy, natural and sexy. The color was balayage (which is French for “to sweep”) with an almost-umber at the bottom. Camella is also a client-turned-friend who did all the copywriting for the salon and is a DJ and musician as well. The artists did a stone brown for the color and the texture was set with a curling iron to make loose waves, which were brushed out to make it fluffy with a light texture.

The lines will show the salon’s commitment to its community, and will showcase what its artists are capable of. “We really wanted to help the individual artists establish their own unique perspective,” says Brackney. On top of launching the new lines, a lifestyle-oriented blog will be available soon on the salon’s website as well. Reipke and Brackney say there will be a lot of local-focused events, hair tips and styling techniques and videos showing styling and make-up how to’s. Along with the blog, the studio’s artists will soon have their own online portfolios, complete with before and after pictures of clients.
Watch for HAUS’s Haute Couture line in the fall—and in the meantime, why not make an appointment? We’ll meet you there.
