The Best From Behind the Scenes
For every actor taking a bow at the curtain call there are dozens of people toiling behind the scenes to make a night at the theater run smoothly.

This is the time of year when Twin Cities’ theater critics are making their lists of 2011’s best shows, playwrights, actors, directors and designers.
These are the creative and talented folk whose theatrical work is most visible when you go to see a play. The lists are always limited by the number of plays the critics were able to experience in a year.
I want to take a moment to recognize the creative and talented people whose work is harder to recognize.
For every actor taking a bow at the curtain call there are dozens of people toiling behind the scenes to make a night at the theater run smoothly. Here is a list of a fraction of the hundreds of people who supported theater in the Twin Cities this year.
My choices are, of course, also limited by the plays I was able to experience during the year.
+ Jocelyn Olson, stage manager, Lakeshore Players.
+ Stephanie Drinkard, board operator, Guthrie Theatre.
+ Heather Brady, house manager, Theater Unbound.
+ Jon Skaalen, publicity and marketing (this is not his official title, but he does a wonderful job getting word out about Bridge Theater and many others, especially as related to audiences with disabilities).
+ Matt Kraft, carpenter, Penumbra and Park Square theatres, among others.
+ Brian McClear, rigger, works for several theaters around town.
+ Rick Coleman for work at many theaters around town.
+ The deck crew and dressers who run around backstage dressed all in black to make sure scenery and props are set as needed and actors are in their costumes.
+ Kathy Welch is the artistic director of Minneapolis-based Green T Productions. She also runs the Old Gem Theater in New Richmond, Wisc. with her husband, Rick Coleman. Read more of her work here.
