The Red Stag Supperclub has always been about something more than dinner.

Between its stellar roster of local music and Sunday afternoon trivia, the Northeast Minneapolis restaurant has had a tradition of asking their guests to stay after their plates have been cleared.

Now guests have another reason to stick around: a new film night series, which kicks off at 10 p.m. Wedensday night with a screening of the MPLS Trilogy, three short films by local filmmakers Jaime Carrera and Tyler Jensen.

The films, Dischord, Parade and Passing, examine the hard-fought lives of their protagonists, whether they are trying to survive as a musician, dealing with a spouse's infidelity or coping with insecurity about one's gender identity. The films simultaneously tell the story of three Minneapolis neighborhoods.

Carrera and Jensen originally created the series as part of Cinema Revolution's Minneapolis Project 2010, which commissioned local filmmakers to create short films centered on a certain Minneapolis neighborhood.

"Tyler and I decided to do Northeast because that's where Tyler lives, Powderhorn where I live and Loring because we were both familiar with it," Carrera says.

Carrera and Jensen also challenged themselves to create three films that built off their previous project Station, which they made as part of Cinema Revolution's Dance Film Project in 2009. MPLS Trilogy focuses on the back story of three characters from Station.

"Station is about longing and stagnation, and we wanted to explain why these characters were in that state of stagnation," Carrera says.

They also wanted to recast the characters in MPLS Trilogy, and the short films star several local artists, including musician Chris Tures, dancer Kimberly Lesik and multimedia artist Sinan Goknur. Carrera and Jensen also feature music from local bands like Coach Said Not To and Dark Dark Dark in the films.

"I'm a big fan of local artists. I have a lot of friends who are in bands, and we tried to get as much local music as we could," Carrera says. "I'm friends with Coach Said Not To, and Tyler and I are big fans of Dark Dark Dark. We sent them a rough cut of the movie, and they ended up liking it."

Carrera is excited to be showing MPLS Trilogy at Red Stag. "Red Stag approached us about doing a film night, and they wanted to show around three short films," which worked out perfectly with MPLS Trilogy.

Red Stag also wanted music at the event and allowed Carrera and Jensen to pick the band. Local folk band Aldine will perform, which includes Chris Tures, who stars in "Dischord."

+ Mpls Triology begins at 10 p.m. at the Red Stag Supperclub, 509 1st Ave NE, Mpls. The film series  will continue in the coming months, featuring music videos from  indie label Rhymesayers in January and a compilation from MPLS.TV in February. For more information visit redstagsupperclub.com.
