Minneapolis-based artist Shanna Allyn began creating the images for her photo series, "Strange Beautiful," after relocating to the Midwest from New York City in 2010.

The series showcases an alternative to mainstream beauty and plays with the notions of what is considered beautiful. Allyn focuses on imperfection and natural beauty.

She typically places her subjects in unusual situations and brings taboo issues to the forefront, and her images are often raw and dreamlike, with a hint of quirkiness and a humor that is deadpan and sarcastic.
